ABOUT US.
We first became aware of problems of badger digging and baiting in Shropshire in 1985. During 1986 a small liaison group was formed to address the situation. The group consisted of officers from the Police, R.S.P.C.A, Nature Conservancy Council, Shropshire Wildlife Trust and the Telford Countryside Wardens. The Shropshire Badger Group was officially launched in 1987.
Group Organisation.
The county is divided into kilometre squares each with an Area Contact. The group is overseen by a management committee which comprises elected officers, Area Contacts, Police Liaison Officers and a number of Appointed Officers, who decide on overall group policies, deals with publicity, finance, organising events etc.
Members who wish to can become more involved in dealing with badger problems and in this way the workload is more evenly shared throughout the group.
In addition to the field activities to care for badgers there are occasional meetings,with a speaker, slide show, video demonstrations etc. Area Contacts are encouraged to arrange field visits to improve member’s skills and surveys etc, all designed to increase our knowledge of badgers and the problems they sometimes cause. The main aim of the Group is to protect badgers from illegal persecution. If you see any vehicles parked in unusual places, men with dogs and spades etc, please contact the Police immediately because it could be that a local sett has been , or is being, interfered with. Sadly there is still plenty of abuse about. Our day to day operation involves the recovery of road casualties, rehabilitating those that survive, taking care of orphans, again usually the result of road accidents and responding to public requests for help with problems when badgers get into areas where they may present danger or cause structural damage.
The aim of this site is to encourage a healthy interest in badgers. These creatures are protected by law, but to help save them from persecution and unnecessary disturbance from man we need everybody’s help.
